Hello All Again,
Once again I MUST point out that I have NO
college degree or outstanding personal experience
with lightning.
Once I was standing outside of the Number Two
Building at Trimble (where Customer Service was
located at the time) when a lightning strike
happened so close I could detect no difference
between the flash and the bang.
Across the street, a large oak tree was cleaved
in half, falling on some poor person's brand new
Honda car. What a shame, and WOW was I
impressed!!!
The part of the tree (one major branch) that had
fallen was over 30 inches in diameter and QUITE
alive at the time! Thus I realized that this small
strike was a signal to ME to gain a little more
respect for this particular force of nature.
Oh YES I respect it now!!!
Of course My pitiful attempts to protect MY boat
has to do with insuring that my mast id directly,
electrically, connected to my keel.
Then again, I live in Northern California where
that was my ONLY close encounter with lightning!
I should be MUCH more concerned about earthquakes
(who cares on a boat?), "Tidal Waves" (maybe) and
mudslides (if we ever get significant rain again,
but again, who cares on a boat?).
But I am not concerned about any of these things.
I guess I am just one of those people who think
"It can't happen to ME".
