I made one out of solid aluminum rod several years ago, with a very sharp
narrow cone-shaped point, the opposite end threaded and attached to a simple
bracket made from aluminum angle. After it had been up for a year or so I
was sailing along, looked up to check the windex, and noticed a very
distinct wobble at the mounting point. It was then that I concluded the
chances of being struck by lightning were probably less than the chances of
being impaled by the falling lightning rod.
In other words, whatever you make it out of, make sure you mount it more
securely than I did, and keep an eye on it.
