Thanks Jeff, that was useful info.

I'm in the process of obtaining the same unit.

How has the leather chafe guard worked out for you?

    Thanks in advance.

    Steve,

Thanks for the 'emergency lock washer' idea, I'll file that one away in the
back of my mind to use someday - never know when that type of knowledge will
    save the day.

The 'Red' thread lock liquid works like a charm. The drill will stall out
before the chuck will un-screw. As you most likely know, on 2 speed winches
the reverse or counterclockwise speed is the most powerful. The downside is
you really can't remove the chuck to vary the gearing - the RAD is setup to
provide two speeds by removing the chuck and inverting the right angle
adaptor. However, the slower speed is just what you want for this
    application.

As far as I can tell the Winch Buddy is a Milwaukee right angle drill with a
rubber type cover along with a winch bit, and a case - I saw some prices at
$1,200 for their product. It actually got me to thinking to put one
together, especially when I found the winch bit on EBAY for $50. BTW there
are two winch bits available - one is square (4 sides) the other has 8 sides
that fill all the milled slots in the winch, the one with 8 sides is a
better product, IMHO - I bought both to try. The drill sits more securely in
the winch with the 8 sided one.

I created a leather cover for the drill, more to keep damage to the boat
down as this drill has some weight to it, don't drop it on your foot. Have 2
batteries for it. Extra batteries are somewhere around $125, but are
guaranteed for 2000 recharges. The technology on this V-28 is impressive -
you can further research it on the web. The charger is a 120VAC unit and the
old Trace MW inverter works fine with it. A 12VDC charger was on the horizon
when I was buying parts and might be available now. Charging time is
approximately 1 hour. The batteries have a unique charge indicator built in.

So far, I have $400 in the V28 RAD, $125 for the extra Battery, $100 in two
winch bits, $20 in leather and some time putting it all together. About $650
    - about half price it seems.

The limitation here is the size of your winch - you can't expect to pull a
200lb person up the mast with a winch rated for 100lbs, the RAD will just
stall at some point - but you don't have enough arm strength to crank it out
    manually as well.

I like my setup very much, money well spent as I was shopping Anderson
electrics which if you add installation, wiring, breakers, yada, yada, yada
    is about $7500.

I find on my boat projects that taking the price of the part and multiply by
three will get you very close to what it ends up costing
(installed/turnkey), I price my labor on these projects at a $75.00 an hour
flat rate - no extra for nights, weekends or overtime though. The $75 an
hour is really cheap for the talent, engineering services and overall
quality of the work. The customer is generally thrilled with the end result.

Sorry to ramble on here - thought this might be of interest.

I had an advertiser who makes one that solves all the problems you confront
on this, and they designed it for a winch (Winch Buddy) but I thought the
price was high at a $1000 although I understand it was designed and built to

high standards for the job and water environment, although I thought you
could be 3-4 cordless ones like you have for the same price. If you had an
impact-like adjustment like on a screw gun, but in reverse, it might solve
the problem, but I await your findings after welding it on.

I was in construction for many years and periodically used what I called the

emergency lock washer when I didn't have one: Just take some
pliers/visegrips and screw up the threads so a nut can't easily come off,
although if it breaks the screw, that might no work as my method still
allows you to remove the nut with some wrenches. It just can't come loose on

    its own or real easily.
