Sugar does have a lobby a big and very effective one.
The price of our sugar is "supported" thu the use of import quotas.
As I look out of my window I am surrounded by sugarcane fields on all sides.
During the energy crises in the 70's several large and very expensive
ethanol plants were built around here. They sat idle and were eventually
mostly dismantled having produced no ethanol.
Your tax dollars at work.
Another thing,. there was an article in the Baton Rouge La paper about the
need to build more fertilizer plants for the increase in need due to the
expected increase in acreage of cane, corn etc to " meet the demand".
Guess what the feed stock for the fertilizer is -------NATURAL GAS.
It is just a huge trade off, burn it here or burn it there!!!!!!
Note that there is a project to convert old offshore oil platforms ( off the
Louisiana coast) to harness wind power, THAT makes since. The politicians in
Massachusetts stopped such a project a year or so ago as it would impact the
"view" .
