Methane production as a byproduct of waste water processing is a very
common practice.
Most waste water facilities have an anaerobic digester to produce the
methane along with a gas turbine and/or a flare to burn the methane.
Not much of a reach to adapt the technology to abandoned underground oil
wells to replace the digester.
