Get one of more of the many guidebooks to this region:
http://www.bcbooks.com/fishcruising.html
http://www.waggonerguide.com/
I like the Waggoner guide to marinas, cruising
destinations, fuel stops, etc., but there are several
competitive publications.
I have no commercial connection to any of these
authors by the way. I have used the Waggoner guide
and books by Don and Reanne Douglas for cruising from
the Puget Sound to SE Alaska. There are also some
magazines that run annual marina guides - Pacifc
Yachting for example.
You will find many yacht brokers in Vancouver and
Sydney who will be happy to sell you a boat. Since
you have 6 years to get ready, you might look into
chartering once or twice to get a sense of what
cruising in this region is like.
