I think the company of choice varies somewhat with your location. I used a Blackberry with Nextel. The Blackberry was very durable, as in fell out of a bike pouch mounted on my car, and was returned, working, the next day, but is a terrible phone. Likewise, I can't say much good about Nextel/Sprint. I've been more happy with Verizon. I use a Bluetooth phone with Verizon, but not a PDA. The Bluetooth works well, but don't get the headset wet.

for my first 6 mo to a year of "retirement" I will still be
oncall to the old firm as a consultant. in order to ensure
that I am accessible by voice, TM and email even when
wandering in the scrap yard or anchored out, I am thinking
of asking the company to invest in a 1 year contract for
some kind of phone/pda device like the Treo, Blackberry,
Ipaq.
I know I am becoming an old fogey when I confront this
technology. it's bewildering and the ISPs deliberately
obfuscate it further with their labyrinthine and sometimes
deceptive plans and price structures.
I wondered if anyone onlist was burdened with this degree
of work-related connectivity and if so, which provider had
worked best for you (preferably in the Pac NW). my wish
list includes:
compatible with Mac OSX powerbook
avoid WinDoze if possible
operate either side of the US/Canada border w/o huge
roaming fees
device can function as wireless modem for laptop
long battery life
no stupid extra features like built in digicam, just
voice, web browser, and email
IMAP not POP
ssh client highly desirable
fits in pocket
can run off 12v
is there any hope?
so far I am still trying to make sense of GSM vs CDMA and
how EVDO interacts with either; I have heard that Verizon
is evil and disables Bluetooth functionality when they
configure a Treo; Cingular does not exist in Canada, which
rules out the iPhone (vaporware anyway); and I am leaning
towards the Treo/palm and Sprint. Telus Mobility are
rapidly becoming not my favourite company... and that's
about it for the research so far.

I look forward to being *really* retired and ditching all
this nonsense for good, checking my mail from wifi cafes
once a month :-)
