I have used an Aqua Star in a residential situation for years. I have been very satisfied. It is made by Bosch, one of the largest major appliance manufacturers in Europe. If you are concerned about the pilot light, they make a model with piezo ignition. I agree with Norm about the venting. The water heater is an intermitent source of CO--certainly no more than an oven or cooktop. If it were a continuous source of CO, it might be a concern.

I have used a residential style instant propane tankless hot water heater for decades without significant problems.

Google AquaStar and Paloma, I have owned both. I like the AquaStar, but the Paloma may have improved. Consumers Reports downgraded it because the pilot used a lot of gas, but that may be fixed or you can just light it when you want hot water.

There is some controversy, but I have found from personal experience that venting is not needed, any more than venting is needed for a gas galley range.

I’m looking to install a hot water shower in my Columbia 41 sloop. I live aboard in Bermuda and keep her on a mooring. Do I need a special marine rust proof water heater or will a camping type propane fixture work?
