No argument there Ken, I prefer to be offshore myself when I can for the reasons you mention. But John's concerns are more about techniques to handle sailing solo, since his wife isn't that keen on joining him.
Another thought - and this applies to those now boating with a less than exuberant partner. A lot of women can benefit from boating training geared specifically to the concerns of women.
I did a one day course (I'm an instructor) for a couple of women in my marina whose spouses (as many do) tended to do the majority of the sailing and driving of the boat. With just the ladies and I aboard, we covered docking, anchoring, sail trim and a bit of navigation.
One of the husbands came to me later and thanked me - his wife, he told me, is a MUCH more enthusiastic partner onboard now that she has a better understanding of, and knows that she can, if she has to, run the boat herself.
If that isn't encouragement enough to run a similar course in your marina, guys, answer this question: if you have a heart attack, or go overboard, can your wife drive the boat? Or have you been relegating her to jobs YOU think she can handle?
Hate to say it guys, but the 'little woman' is a big girl now! Give her a chance and see how much more enjoyable boating can be.

Actually, in my experience as well as many others, it is much easier
from many perspectives to sail offshore than it is to do coastal
sailing. That is once you get out of the shipping lanes or away from
heavy traffic. Yes, getting enough sleep can be a problem, but most of
the time it is not.-Ken
