Those books are referring to offshore sailing - which
I don't think is where John is coming from. I'm going
to copy the list with some suggestions for
singlehanding that I've made to him offlist, in case
anyone else is interested. Some of these are
worthwhile suggestions for those whose spouse is less
than active in helping to run the boat.

Practice is always a good thing, lol....seriously tho,
things like running all your lines to the cockpit and
planning out all possible contingencies go a long way
to preventing problems when things don't go as
planned.
As well, since it isn't easy to work navigation issues
while driving the boat, do all your trip planning the
day before, and have waypoints set for fallback
positions
- for example, you can't make your day's anchorage or
a storm comes up unexpectedly. You can't take time to
stare at charts and figure out what to do. But if
you've noted anchorages and other important items
beforehand, if problems arise, you can easily and
simply alter your plans. I always have two anchorages
picked out - my goal and another, closer one if for
some reason I can't reach the goal. Then, it's simply
a matter of changing my mind, not deciding what I need
to do next.
