When I went out to check my boat at anchor here in AL a while back, my
boat being perfectly legal in every sense with all stickers and ect up
to date and since I know all the folks in the creek here and they all
were fine with me there, as some of them were also since their docks
were destroyed, we all having been at anchor since the hurricane
destroyed the marina and slips anywhere were scarce (although I since
have found one and moved the boat), anyway the water police here
'intercepted' me as I rowed out to check the bilges and put me through
the little dance they do wanting to see my boat operators lic/drivers
lic/picture ID., registration, all my flares, horn and bell, life
jackets, fire extinguishes, head, dingy papers and numbers, etc. then
asking if I was living aboard (I was not at that time) and at last the
young lady doing all the asking asked me in obvious frustration (since
they had found no violations to give them a lever I think) "do you have
a job?" NOT "where are you employed?" obviously already having made up
her mind that I was a "bum" and as such deserved less respect if not
less rights than everybody else. In answer to her question I told her I
did not have a job, and just before she could spit out her next sentence
added I was retired and made just enough to keep me in beans, whereupon
the older guy in charge called her off and they left.
I think the entire incident says a lot about the water cops attitude.
