In the early days of aviation in Alaska, bush pilots flying to remote
locations where they had to stay overnight drained the oil from their planes
upon landing and took it inside with them to keep it warm. They then
refilled the crankcase with the warm oil in the morning and immediately
started the engine.
When I lived in northern Michigan, I had a heater on my gas engined tractor
that heated the coolant and circulated it (with a small electric pump)
throughout the cooling system. Worked well even at -40F.
