    Although dumb to go through the bridge (or into it) under autopilot, there
    is a probable explanation. They were on the fluxgate compass, not GPS, and
    the magnetic attraction of all the steel in the concrete support disturbed
    the fluxgate.

    East of Knapp's Narrows on the Bay, if you go North from the Narrows you run
    over an iron deposit or a really BIG magnet which causes autopilots to go
    nuts.

    I guess this all fits under, "Autopilots don't kill people, people kill
    people."
