I suggest you look up Bandersnatch's Fuel System in the Livaboard Archives
or I will send you a copy.

Essentially, the way I have made my fuel system trouble-free is to suck the
fuel from the absolute bottom-most point of the tank (to insure there is no
water/glop accumulation), install an electric fuel pump (to prime, test and
service the fuel system), install several pressure/vacuume gauges (to see
the condition of the filters and system flows), and a bypass valve (to
return filtered fuel to the tank after going through the primary filter to
    remove water/glop).

The only "justification" for a proper fuel system is to have an engine that
doesn't stop until the operator stops it. The size of the vessel is
    immaterial.
