Take a look at SGC's web site, <http://www.sgcworld.com/>. SGC is a
prominent manufacturer of automatic antenna couplers. Browse the site,
and you will find their publications describing how to mount antennas in
various kinds of vessels.
I have had good success with their automatic antenna couplers, even with
rather sub-optimal antennas. You can learn a lot by reading their material.
I highly recommend automatic antenna couplers -- whether from SGC or
their competitors, LDG.
