having gone through a number of good bikes, I've decided to find bikes in
each port.
so far i've found that if you contact a local bike shop when you arrive,
most of them either have loaners or will rent you a used bike cheap.
now that does not help you when its 0100 and you just arrived in a port and
have to travel two miles with no taxi's available.

I had full size Dahon folders for a few years and they were a real pain
to get on & off and carry on board - they took too much room. I now
have Dahon's with smaller wheels (18", I think) and they are much easier
to get on & off and more reasonably sized for storage. I had custom
bags made for them. They always seem to need some adjustment and
fiddling with.
The smaller wheels are fine for exploring around a port, but I would not
want to go cross country (rougher ride). They are a reasonable
compromise.
There are dozens of brands of folders, they are big in England. Some of
the Dahons (US) are marinized. Try Defender Industries.
