I have never seen one on a boat but seen many on Ham radio
towers. I have heard of people talking around the world
on them on HF ham radio and even 6m ham. They don't
require a ground plane so they should work.

If you do a search for ham radio antennas you will find a
bunch of different types that you can build. From there
you will need to adjust them to the center of the
    frequency that you want.

You can also find long wire types that you can run up a
    halyard.
