lv-ab: mast boot and deck collar leaks

I own a 1977 downeaster 45 sailboat with a schooner rigging. It has keel
stepped masts. When it rains, I have water dripping from the bolts on the
deck collar of the main mast. I am not sure whether the leak is from the
bolt heads, from around the deck collar, or from the mast boot.

My question is, is it ok to remove the mast boot, whatever is underneath it,
and the deck collar to fix this leak, leaving the mast supported by the
rigging alone? My worry is that the mast will shift. As you can tell, I am
new to this kind of maintenance.

    Thanks,

    Alan
