This post got migrated from another bulletin board so pertinent information
was lacking.
This is not WIFI or 802.xx. It is a plug in card that I'm trying out that
uses the Cellphone Technology to give you connection anywhere. Dual band
800/1900 MHz.
$60 per month unlimited usage and free hardware with 2 year contract.
Coverage currently is most cities and towns and along freeways and highways.
It is degraded by the number of people using your local cell but it has
never run more than 120K which is pretty bad for a system they advertise as
"up to 2.4M" One would expect say 50% worst case, not 5%.
I figured it is about the same cost as my DSL although rated at half the
speed but it would be a good substitute considering the portability. So far
it is a dead loss. I contacted Embarq and they said to take it to the local
store and have them check it out which I will do today. I'll report
results.
