I have an electric mattress pad that I have used in the past with good
results. It is thick, like a mattress pad and it goes under the sheets. I
sandwiched it between two regular mattress pads and used it to warm up the
bed before retiring by turning it on for about 15-20 minutes before
retiring. We didn't really need it all night.

I wouldn't like to have it tucked around the mattress because of the
possibility of overheating where it was surrounded by close insulating
fabric. Perhaps a double size would fit your berth better. With us
anyway, the idea was to warm up the bed before we crawled in. We had a big
puffy "comforter" that really kept us warm.
