Looks like we finally have the City's attention over the anchoring
ordinance. I have been told that the ordinance is not even enforced
unless there is a complaint. I have also been told that they cannot
remember the last time a citation was written for an offense. They are
concerned that we are exaggerating claims of abuse. They want to get
the truth so they can address the issue and change the ordinance to
something that keeps the derelict boats from being left at anchor while
also allowing responsible boaters to anchor where they choose.
The Chamber would like specific details regarding actual incidents that
have occurred so that they can present them to the City Manager. He is
very interested in hearing of any incidents or abuses. Please email
details of your experiences to Shannon at (and
copy the list) so she can present them to the City Manager. Now that we
have their attention, lets get these details to her so she can help us out.
In addition, the City has indicated that they would consider revising
the language to something more appropriate, in an attempt to eliminate
abandoned derelict boats only. Maybe the lawyers on the list could
propose some language that would be more appropriate. Or maybe someone
has experience with language used in another city that performs this
function in a way that we can live with. Please email any suggestions
to Shannon at (and copy the list) so she can
present them.
Please, we have people working for us and people are listening. Lets
not miss this chance to make a difference. And please, lets do it in a
professional, intelligent manner so we come across as the mature group
that we are. I thank you all in advance for your participation.
Sam
