On my boat, I have found rusted gear inside well-sealed waterproof bags closed a previous owner. The most important thing is where you store your gear. Some of mine is out in the open and only gets dusty. Other gear is in a wicker screened cabinet while some is in a Cordura, Nylon camera backpack - all is well.
BUT, in a forward cabinet where it tends to get colder and therefore moist in Winter, I have found minor damage to manuals and have moved them and related gear out of that wicker doored cabinet. I think the enemy there was lack of air circulation. I have a trawler, so most gear is well above the waterline. If your boat is air-conditioned and heated - you probably don't need desiccants. If you are in a moist climate with the dehumidification of A/C, I would think desiccants and sealed plastic or metal containers.

Subject: lv-ab: Storing camera equipment on board
Hi
Got some camera equipment I'll be storing on board and wanted to know if any of you photographers out there had any recommendations on how to store it to avoid the equipment getting attacked by the usual nautical environment. Waterproof bags? Moisture crystals?
