Norm - My dad was a cop, so I've stated my bias up
    front.
There are some bad cops, it goes without saying. There
are also bad milkmen, teachers, priests and
ministers...people in general, but - in general, cops
are everyday people doing a hellish job.
Cops - to the extent that they deliberately,
purposely, step into harm's way every single shift
they work - for the purpose of protecting your
ungrateful ass - are worthy of greater protection from
our courts than what they are given. They are the line
between safety and anarchy on the streets, flawed
    though they might be.
As a child, I remember my mother's fear when Dad went
to work one day on a dangerous stakeout - we were
fortunate, Dad always came home, but Mom lived twelve
hours of fear for her husband. Not every cop's wife
and family is so fortunate as was ours.
Sure, some cops make stupid decisions and some abuse
their power - happens in every arena of life, but when
you live with and come to understand the intense
pressures - imagine having to face a knife at your
gut, held by a terrified, abused wife you've come to
protect, as happened to my Dad - or have to live with
the knowledge that you had to shoot and kill someone
to protect yourself or another; imagine the cops
working on the child sex unit, having to watch
unimaginable filth in order to arrest paedophiles who
would harm our children, and what that must do to them
    - and most people cannot begin to imagine such a thing
    - then you'll know just a tiny bit about what living a
    cop's life is.
So don't whine about getting an unjust ticket. Go to
court and fight it. That's what the process is all
    about.
