[Tom:] Some other additives. Go to the swimming pool section of Wal-Mart.
Get the huge box of Diatomaceous Earth used in swimming pool filters. The
big box will last you a LONG time. Sands easily.
Go to any athletic supply house and buy a box of the pulverized' lime they
use for marking out base lines, etc. on a baseball and football fields.
Cheap. However, make sure you want it where you put it because sanding it
off is like trying to sand down the slow lane of Interstate 95 by hand. But
it is strong.
[Jeff:] Yes, diatomaceous earth is essentially powdered silica, not unlike
cab-o-sil! Over the weekend I finished glassing and filleting the chines. In
the fillets I used equal parts polyester resin, concrete grout, and wheat
flour for smoothness. It wasn't very smooth. It didn't have thixotropic
qualities either, remaining runny as I added more and more additives, until
it became very thick. So maybe I'll add diatomaceous earth next time.
