Your post sparked an interest in your comment about a serpentine belt kit -
do you know if that is available for the old 4-108 4 cylinder Perkins? Or,
where can I find more info about this kit?

Thanks to all for the great leads and ideas! Too bad my engine is not a 4
cylinder as Perkins has a serpentine belt kit that would have probably
worked well.
I am investigating a double belt pulley and mounting a second alternator
facing backward with a separate regulator and battery bank. I will let you
all know how it works when I have it installed.
