The best dc charging alternator in my opinion is the Zena Welder. Go to
Zena.net it's a lot of reading but their product needs explaining
    because its very different.

They have 150 and 200 amp continuous duty chargers that double as
welders (mig, tig, stick) those of you on steel boats, or those wanting
a new profession (welding stainless and aluminum) while cruising should
think about getting a zena installed on your engine either as a
replacement alternator or as a second alternator.

The consensus seems to be that an alternator to charge a battery bank
that would be substantial enough to power a pure sine wave inverter of
1500 or 2000 watts would be the best route. Can anyone be more specific
about the alternator type (1 wire or 3 wire, amperage etc.), battery
size/s and inverter size and make? Also a 3 stage regulator?
I would appreciate specifics so that I don't have to go through the
    learning curve to know what I need...yes I know...I'm lazy. :>)
