I think it is a technique called SVO, Straight Vegetable Oil. Typically,
one started the motor up under regular Diesel (or BioDiesel), once the motor
is warmed up switch over to the SVO (One reason, the SVO is ran through a
heat exchanger to warm/thin the oil before it gets to the motor). Need to
switch back to the Diesel before stopping to purge the system.

Further to my other post,
For those wanting to experiment with SVO you can pick up selector valves,
fuel line electric heaters, etc at local automotive wreckers for very little
money. FORD diesel trucks have a 3/8" fuel line from lift pump to filter
that incorporates a 12V heating element. And the filter already has a bleed
valve for purging air from fuel system. The dual fuel pipes and tank gauge
comes as a single assembly on a plate that fits into the tank. It would be
an easy matter to adapt this to some other tank you place in your boat. For
truck use I intend to use those flat mats heaters that bond with adhesive
to the bottom of the fuel tank.
Mitsubichi diesel engined vehicles have a fuel heater (12v) built into the
filter canister holder as well as a manual primer pump.
These components can be piped with flexible fuel lines and hose barbs or
rigid fuel lines properly flared and connected together.
Just be sure you get ethanol rated flexible fuel line.
