reefer/freezers that work well, heads that don't smell too bad and
accessible storage are mostly engineering issues.
our Engel reefers worked very well but were a bit small [they do make
larger ones] and our current Sundanzer units work wonderfully well but are
rather large for most sailboats.
there is no getting around the fact that top-opening is the only way to go
for reasonable efficiency, inconvenient as it may be. we put thin rope
handles on our baskets which made it much easier to handle them.
many heads are plastic and some plastics are slightly porous. and since
they have nooks and crannies they are often a pain to clean throughly. i
clean mine once a week and we do not have a smell problem as long as i do
so and there are no problems with the system. but it is bronze with no
plastic until the discharge hose [from home depot, btw]. we have no problems
from the hose
storage is also a problem in smaller boats but even in large boats our
stuff seems to expand to overwhelm whatever storage is available, just like
ashore. a big help is to install electric lights in lockers so that
everything is easy to see and find. another thing is to use a computer
data base inventory. i use an antique program called pc file, i have
almost 1600 items on it. it is wonderful to be able to instantly see where
all my genset spares are, or what packing i have aboard and where it is
located. it is some trouble to set it up and keep it up to date and backed
up but well worth the effort. on the down side, since with the data base
you can put anything anywhere if you loose something it is really lost!
perhaps men pay less attention to domestic issues because they are
responsible for engineering issues so they are more focused on these than
women are since women don't have to deal with such things as keeping the
hull afloat, the engine running and the rig from falling down.
personally, although i am responsible for all the design and construction i
insist on having jan's input on all issues affecting both of us, and often
ask for her input on engineering as well. not only do i occasionally have
my attention drawn to something i have overlooked [it was jan that
instantly saw that the #$%&* idiots at village marine tech had destroyed
the ss guts of the ro high pressure pump by putting a brass plug in the
titanium pump head], having a different perspective on a situation is often
very helpful. as a result we have a very comfortable vessel [as
comfortable as can be in the summer in florida without air conditioning on
all the time] with the galley, the head, and the berth all designed and
built to our specs by us for maximum comfort and utility.
engineering is primary, without engineering you have no boat, but comfort
is also essential because without comfort you have no home
