I like the idea of using cheap, large, effective 120vac fans running off an
    inverter.

However, I am still exploring the use of 12 VDC fans. Currently I have two
largish muffin (computer) fans at the foot of the main berth hooked up for
parallel or series (at 6 volts each) on the 12 volt line. They do not push
enough air at slow speed to be comfortable in Florida summer nights, and at
    high speed are noisy.

A new avenue I am exploring is using automotive radiator fans turning at
less than 12 volt speed. The idea is to use a large fan turning at less
than full speed to get a large air flow with less noise.

A problem I have come across is obtaining a speed controller. If someone
would be so kind as to do the on-line research I would be grateful. My
Internet connection is spotty where I am now.

The company is Compressorworks. They make automobile air conditioning and
cooling equipment. The brand name is Torqflo, and the part number of the
    Adjustable Control is 733651.

This control may be useful for other applications aboard.
