For reliable and "tough" laptops, I vote for IBM; most business's still standardize on IBM's because of the savings in the medium term at a slight additional cost up front. The laptop division was sold to a Chinese firm last year, but they optioned the IBM Thinkpad name for 5(?) years and as I understand it's contingent on keeping the quality up. They sell most models refurbed for major discounts (1/3-1/2 new price). A friend bought one, but had to replace the hard disk w/in 6 months of her purchase; but even w/that expense (from a local computer store) it was a great deal. Amazingly their tech support was able to talk her through the whole replacement process over the phone! (She's a writer/gardener, never had a computer apart before.)
Cheers, Rufus
