I encountered a very interesting little sign in a WW2 museum submarine wardroom in Charleston SC.

It said: "There are only two kinds of vessels, submarines and targets."

At the time I was spending a great deal of my time on an oil tanker, a prime "target".

It's good to hear of some mutual fear on the other side of the torpedo.

    Philip,

I served some 20 years on a nuclear sub.

Our worst fear: a deep draft tanker that is on a collision course.

    Why?

One, her draft can be 150+ feet and unless we are below 200', we occupy her space....

Also, with her bulk, we cannot hear her aft engines when forward of her no matter what the speed.

So, a ship like that is a GIANT DEADLY monster.

My training tells me that even navy surface ships might not hear 9with hull mounted sonar) commercial tonnage due to sound propagation paths and other anomalies... Not 100% sure but we do have some navy surface warfare experts on this list...

As far as watch keeping aids are concerned I would think that a passive sonar unit would be just the ticket. Sound travels faster and further underwater than in the air and a ship of fishing vessle would be audible for some distance.

Any one hear of such a thing for small boats?
