sonar unit would be just the ticket. Sound travels faster and further
underwater than in the air and a ship of fishing vessle would be audible for
some distance.
Any one hear of such a thing for small boats?

Well we did use them for the "small warships" called corvettes during
the last war. We called them ASDIC
Essentiually it was a directional hydrophone which cluld be rotated by a
steering wheel from the control station.
