Here are a couple more data points on the "how much horsepower"
question. We have a Grand Banks 49 trawler weighing about 60,000 lbs,
having a lot of windage, and a fairly inefficient hull shape by
sailboat standards. To punch through head seas and a stiff breeze at
something close to hull speed takes about 180 to 200 horsepower.
Running a knot or so slower in calm conditions takes about 120 hp.
These estimates are based on fuel burn rates.
How does that compare to predictions?
