Rockport is a delightful town. A bit touristy, but charming nevertheless.

My Mom actually had an antique shop on Tuna Wharf on Bearskin Neck, right across from Motif #1 back in the early sixties. Turned out that antiques were too high-end for the traffic so she moved to central New Hampshire.

We always visit Rockport when we are in Gloucester. Be sure to get some lobsters to eat on the back deck. I don't remember the name of the shop, but they are on Bearskin Neck and have a big red lobster as a sign.

The Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA) busses are wonderful. They pick up and drop off at request anywhere along their route. We love the Saturday (and it's only on Saturday) mall run, a continous loop all day from Gloucester to two North Shore malls. It's like a club, filled with regulars. One day, on the last run home, we chased a fire engine to see what was going on, then the driver took all the old ladys to their doorsteps (as well as us to the dinghy dock at Harbor Loop). It just doesn't get any better than this!

CATA has two routes between Rockport and Gloucester. One goes through the center of the Cape by scores of charming New England houses, the other goes along the coast showing spectacular views of the sea. We always do this grand circle when we are anchored in Gloucester and visit Rockport.

Furthermore, there is an excellent commuter train service from Rockport and Gloucester to Salem and Boston. DO go to Salem and visit their very excellent Peabody Museum and the many witchy shops. Boston is one of my favorite cities and a major tourist attraction. Our favorite bar is the Sail Loft down on the waterfront.

Rockport has an anchorage just off back beach/front beach which is great, except of course if the wind is coming from the east(ish). Even then, though, the breakwater is very effective. For the July 4th festivities I have seen upwards of 40 vessels anchored there. You can get transient dockage in Rockport Harbor at the Sandy Bay Yacht Club (to fill up on water and food, etc), and move to the anchorage later. People forget about Rockport Harbor, but its a great little port, and all the shops and restaurants are close to the harbor, and within walking distance.

Just ask the harbormasters, Scott Story or Rosemary Lesch (Or Ron / Story the asst harbormasters). They'll set you right up and are extremely nice folks.
