    Gene and Geri,

I am told that usually, the bubble occurs when the compass is exposed
to sunlight, then not, then more, etc. etc that allows the oil to
warm up and expand out, to be replaced by a air!

I had this problem on a friend's boat recently, and in discussions
with the maker of the compass, sending it to a repair shop for
"refurbishment" will get the air out.

We brought it to a local "authorized" compass repair center here in
Antalya, Turkey and showed him the problem.

It was a one man shop, and I can swear that the owner was so old, he
had to be around when the N-S magnetic lines shifted into their
    current positions. <VBG>

He asked us to go to lunch and come back in about an hour or so.

We did and when we returned, he had the compass filled, and had used
a mechanical type buffing wheel to make the plastic dome all clean
and new looking. (It had lots of scratches!)

We asked what fluid he used. He showed us a dark brown bottle of
compass fluid from a german compass maker.

We thought that any clear mineral oil would work.

He said that most "normal" oils will darken over time but this oil
will remain clear for as long as the we own the compass.

However, he admonished us: When NOT in use, keep it covered with a
while to light colored towel, or but a compass cover.

This will prevent the heat and cooling cycle and minimize the
    probability of recurrence.

BTW, the cost was about $21.00

    Gene,
I was hoping to see some replies to your inquiry and didn't. How
did you put the mineral oil into the compass? We has the issue and
are not sure how to fix it? We thought we would have to buy a new
compass, but if it can be fixed that would be great. Oh, we haven't
seen any signs of leakage either.

I got some mineral oil, which seemed to be the same smell and
thickness as what was in there. Got all the air out, seems fine.

Now I need to see if it gets more air. After 15 years it just got a
big bubble one day. No leakage noted. Hmmm....
