Sorry; this is definitely incorrect. It makes no difference where the boat
is registered. If anything for that boat is brought into the BVI, you owe
BVI tax/duty; average 17.5% of value as valued by customs agent, so you
better have an invoice to prove its value so that you are not overcharged.
Applies to more than just your boat. Anything newly purchased and brought
into the country for use in the country will be subject to the import
tax/duty. It is solely at the discretion of the customs agent.
We had a boat in charter in BVI for almost 5 1/2 years. She was documented
USCG. If customs knew when we entered that we were owners of a boat
currently in the BVI, they would search all our luggage. They would not
accept statements like "I am just bringing my good binoculars and
flashlights for my personal use during the next 2 weeks and will not be
leaving them on the boat." They insisted on collecting the tax. Happened
every single time that they overheard us talking about owning a boat down
there. We learned to just pretend to be regular charter customers and put
charter luggage tags on our bags. They never once searched our luggage
again.
