    Lee and Dwight,

You might find that shipping costs and duties can very quickly eat up any
savings of buying locally and shipping to the islands. We will be shipping
some items and lots of books to a mailing service on St. John because USVI
postage rates are same as US Domestic postage and the media rate is most
reasonable. But that company has very limited space and cannot handle large
packages and will not store anything for any length of time. You must be
there to receive the packages when they arrive. We originally planned to
use Red Hook Mailing Service, but they said we could not open an account
with them unless we had a local address. Not sure why we would even need
their services if we had a local address.

There is a company on Tortola called Store-It-BVI, which is a partnership
owned by Mickey Chalwell (a BVI citizen) and Jaime Zachar (who owns a
Moorings boat). Store-It-BVI rents storage space as well as storage bins
which they will deliver to your charter company when you wish. Lots of
charter boat owners use these bins to store their personal items that would
be "lost" if left on the charter boats. Keeps you from having to haul stuff
back and forth for your personal boat trips.

Mickey also owns two freighters that handle inter-island shipping in various
parts of the Caribbean; Sky Seal and Island Seal. Sky Seal picks up in San
Juan and delivers to BVI on a bi-weekly basis. Mickey has an agent in San
Juan. Here is the agent contact info:
    Bill Humprey
    Agent for Mickey Chalwell
    c/o Sky Seal
    Pier 10
    San Juan, Puerto Rico
    Contact phone 787.378.6190 or 787.809.8426

You need to include an invoice (like a Bill of Lading) indicating stated
value for whatever goods you ship down there. For example, my assymetrical
sail that was delivered there last spring included an invoice showing value
    of 25USD.

But you must first contact Mickey Chalwell to arrange for his transport
service. DO NOT SHIP TO THE AGENT BEFORE FIRST CONTACTING MICKEY or his
wife, Natasha Chalwell. Mickey can arrange to deliver your shipment to BVI
and store it until your arrival. Obviously, there will be a charge for this
service; but I found his charges to be very reasonable. The email address
    to contact Store-It-BVI is

I have no connection to this company except that I used them to get our sail
down there. If you should decide to store items, you should note that
roaches are a problem, as you would expect. It would be advisable to have
the storage bin delivered to your charter company; open it away from the
boat; and treat for insects before putting any stored items on your boat.

But if you are in the market for an outboard and want a new one and have the
time to deal with it, the best price available down there would be a Budget
Marine in St. Martin. They give 10% discount for cash purchases. You can
check out their online catalogue. But don't just show up over there
expecting them to have one in stock; verify by email first. They will hold
for month for pick-up if you provide a credit card deposit.

Besides, a trip over to St. Martin is always fun if you have the time.

I am purchasing a Leopard 38 catamaran that will remain in a charter fleet
in Tortola, BVI. I need to provide an outboard for the dingy, and have an
extra in Ithaca, NY. Is there any economical way to ship an outboard to
    Tortola?
