    I agree completely with Ken.

Waterproofness is extremely important. Also try the binocs before you buy, and buy the ones your select. Alignment varies from pair to pair. Look at a distant object with one eye closed, then open the eye. If you see two images for a second before they merge, that is the degree of misalignment.

Higher price increases odds of getting good glasses, but does not guarantee it.

That Tasco "Guarantee" is just like the Village Marine Tech "Guarantee" of my RO watermaker and is simply larceny. The perps should be in prison.

Unless you are planning on immersing the set in water most binoculars are sealed really tight.

Think so? Not in my experiance. Any not waterproof will get fogged up in any really damp conditions. Most models with center focus are not even close to being water tight, others are better but will let you down when you need them most.
Binoculars are made for outdoors not always for sunny days. The black coating stand pretty
good around salt water too. Nothing wrong with the water-proof ones.

Black coating? You mean paint? My Steiners, state of the art in the early '80s when I got them, have some corrosion now around the edges of the rubber...I doubt if it was not as well sealed it would have stood this well, but I think some newer ones are even better.

If you go the cheap route, don't expect they will be there for you on that dark night with a sudden squall and you trying to pick out the rocks at the jetty entrance or whatever!
It is your life...what is it worth?-Ken
