I've gotten many good suggestions. Thanks to all.
Here's where I stand now, and some details that I didn't think to include.
The Missen is aluminum, which I think most of you guessed, even though I
didn't think to include the fact. Also, the wire is completely the high voltage
wire that is normally used from the tuner to the backstay. The tuner is the
AT130 that is from Icom and designed to go with this radio.
I am unable to get wwv at any freq, although Rainbow Chaser 100 feet away
picks it up fairly well. It also will not pick up a comercial am station (550 )
I can get well on Rainbow Chaser.
Tonight I decided to just fire up Rainbow Chaser's radio to blast it and see
if anything would get through. I'm glad to report that at 6230 mhz from a
distance of 100 feet, and 150 watts it receives quite well!
I then decided that, even though it doesn't seem to be right, things were
hooked up well enough to try to transmit. Answering back from Sun Chaser ( the
new boat with the ailing SSB, I could just barely pick out a faint, wavering
signal in the noise.
I think the suggestion of an emergency antenna hoisted in the clear is now
the next step I should try. I believe there is a good chance that the antenna,
or nearly lack thereof, is most, if not all, of the problem.
Thanks for all the good ideas. If there is any news to report, I'll post it.
