    The same idiot who designs a deliberate weak (safety) link to protect a much
    more expensive part or piece of equipment.

    The friction fit of coupling to shaft is calculated to slip only when the safe
    working load of the drive line is exceeded.
    Which would you rather do? Refasten the coupling or replace the whole
    transmission?

    Same thing with a shear pin. I know certain peopel who deplored the idiocy of
    the "stupid" designes who put in a soft brass shear pin in the propeller hub.
    When they hit a rock and sheared the pin they cursed and then replaced the pin
    with a nice strong steel pin.
    Guess what, next time they hit a rock it was the gearbox that broke, not the
    shear pin.

    Mind you, the designer of the deliberate weak link is also assuming that
    proper maintenance and operating proceduer is followed.

    But you're not one of those guys are you?
