Just for info, one of the finest linear actuators ever made that would be
good for steering your boat can be had in the old original "tiller pilot".
They used aircraft units. These old "Tiller Pilot" electronic auto pilot
units, if I remember the brand name correctly, can still be had very cheaply
now and then on ebay and such...BTW, I bet these are the only electronic
auto pilot that somebody could repair the electronic circuitry while on
their boat, all discreet components and simple circuits.
The compass was in an aluminum beer can cut down filled with glycol and had
a sector shaded card with photo sensors for course sensing! Worked well.The
biggest trouble with them was they weren't very water tight.-Ken
