    Hey Wanderer,

Running backstays control the tilt and bend in the mast which allows for fine tuning on a fractionally rigged boat. A must on a racing boat but not needed on a live aboard or cruiser.

    Have a look here: http://www.harken.com/blocks/fastlight.php

Can anyone tell me something about running backstays? Why do some boats have them while most do not? My boat's running backstays attach to the mast at the same level as the inner forestay. Do they act as a counter to the force of the staysail? What if I don't use them? Or remove them altogether?
