lv-ab: Running backstays

    Can anyone tell me something about running backstays? Why do some boats have
    them while most do not? My boat's running backstays attach to the mast at
    the same level as the inner forestay. Do they act as a counter to the force
    of the staysail? What if I don't use them? Or remove them altogether?
