I agree in general with all the replies so far. Just to add my $.02.

I've been sailing for forty uears, and lived aboard and coastal cruised for
the past ten or so. For the first six years it was with a partner, in a 34ft
    sailboat. Since then, I've been single-handing a 32ft sailboat. I'm 57, in
general good health but with some medical issues. As others have noted, a
trawler starts to look inviting, and I have been looking.

This summer I did the first extended single-handed cruise up to New England
and back. A general comment - even with my experience I would NOT do it
again. Age starts to catch up to you, and what used to be fun, especially
with a partner, starts to become just plain hard work.

I WOULD do it again in a trawler, though. The hard work is all related to
sail handling, compensation for heeling, and handling ground tackle. None of
which are required on a trawler, assuming it has a power windlass.

Regarding your comment on trawlers, keep an open mind. I have seen trawlers
in the 28ft to 34ft range that would be very adequate for a single or couple
to live aboard, small enough to handle easily, and could be got used in the
$25k to $50k range. Caveats: if fairly old and lower priced, be prepared for
some expense upgrading and replacing items - above all get a good surveyor.
Also, offshore passages (e.g. across the stream to the Bahamas) need to be
taken with considerable care - moreso than a similar sized sailboat. Also,
ongoing maintenance may be greater than a sailboat (that argument continues
on several lists) so be prepared to pay if you don't do it yourself.

I love sailing, but a trawler would be the only way I'd now cruise
    extensively singlehanded.

I'm a healthy single female in my late 50's. I want to sell my condo and go
sailing. I checked out trawlers but decided they were too big and expensive
for what i really need. Could i handle a sail boat.
    Is this a practical goal?
