Esther,
Dwight has the right idea. First, figure out what you really want to do. Then
determine what skills you will need to achieve that goal. Finally work on
those skills; building them until you are ready.
I was in a similar position a few years ago but with absolutely no sailing
experience. About the only relevant skill I stared with was the ability to
swim.
I searched the Internet for information, joining this list. I read about
different kinds of boats. I started to think about what I really wanted to do
with the boat initially and ultimately. Then my life took a complete left
turn and I got married to a woman that gets seasick at the dock.
But, I learned to sail (CYA basic cruising skipper certified), I drastically
changed my 'ideal boat' from a 40+ foot blue-water yacht to a 30-35 foot
sloop. I am currently looking at some 24 ft boats as a first boat of my own.
Eventually I may still get the 40+ foot blue-water yacht and go around the
world but for now I'm very happy on the lake.
