There was a vinyl coated length of chain on the boat I just purchased. It
felt stiff so I removed it and when it hit the ground it fell apart into a
pile of rust. That cured me of ever thinking of replacing it with the same.
I have been buying SS chain for other uses from www.1st-chainsupply.com/ .
The prices seem good.

Subject: Re: lv-ab: opinions on a S.S. plow anchor
Absolutely correct as usual. On the Spade site, in Q&A, they recommend
only their galvanized anchors for storm anchor use. Although that is partly
motivated by the shank of an Al anchor being subject to bending, their
galvanized anchors are twice the weight of AL anchors. My AL Spade is my
working anchor on my Willard 40. My storm anchor is a 75lb. SS Northill made
by Pekny. Germany and Italy are the primary source of SS swivels. The German
SS Bugle anchor comes as a kit with the SS, WASI Ball swivel. The only
affordable rig for me would be a Nylon/Dacron anchor rode with a short
length of SS or vinyl-coated chain.

As for aluminum anchors, I am old school, bigger and heavier is better.
Aluminum might work well in conditions that do not require the anchor to
penetrate a firmer bottom. I use a 110 LB Bruce.
