Yes, we do call them "clones". :)
This is essentially what I will be doing this Fall. have been building
pc's for myself for 13 years now and would never buy a store brand.
Since I cannot find out how to get laptop components I will be building
a very small format pc into a compartment on my boat. I will have
network cables run throughout the boat as well. I not only want the
exact components I want, I want to be able to open up and swap out any
part I choose or need to replace. I'm looking to use large capacity
solid state "drives' for when sea conditions are very rough.

Hmmm... This is news to me. I will have to look into this. Never seen
any indication that the shops up here that I know can do this. I have
never heard of laptop motherboards that were not proprietary. Would be
good news if it can be done.
