    Hi Philip,

    Thank you for the reply.

The boat in question is state registered in Delaware (tax reasons I understand). Not documented by the USCG.

I have contacted Transport Canada regarding the details of Canadian registration. I have also just emailed the broker to determine if he does the title and lien information.

The only thing I am concerned with is that there are no liens or encumbrances and I assume that those would have to be verified (in this case) by the registration folks in the State of Delaware?

    Regards,

    Malcolm

      Malcolm,
Is the boat registered or Documented? There is a difference between Canadian and U.S wording.
Registration is done by the State, Documentation by the Feds.
Many yachts are documented using a Delaware corporation (formed for the purpose) as owner. (Tax reasons)

It would be also helpful to contact Transport Canada http://www.tc.gc.ca/ShipRegistry/feedback.asp?lang=e and learn what papers are required to register your boat in Canada, if that is what is what you desire. I called them on the phone and found them to be very helpful.
As to US Documentation, you may find the following links helpful:
      http://www.st.nmfs.gov/st1/commercial/landings/cg_vessel2.html

Contact the USCG Vessel Documentation Center (http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/nvdc.htm) for vessel title and lien information.

When I bought our boat in Florida, the broker took care of the title search. As to weather the Broker in the Caribbean feels responsible for doing that, I would contact the broker and ask.

        Hello Everyone,

I may be buying a boat in the Caribbean (Trinidad) that is registered in the
        State of Delaware.

I am Canadian and will be eventually registering the boat in Canada.

My main question is: How do I determine that I am getting clear title to
the boat, does the broker do that, or am I responsible in doing that?
Can I research that online somewhere?

        Thanks,

        Malcolm Fraser
        soon to be boat owner?
