In a message dated 8/3/2005 10:01:25 AM Eastern Daylight Time,
     writes:
    I was thinking something
like the winch on the front of the boat in the picture I attached to
this email. Just a good old fasioned (probably hydraulic) winch.

The picture showed a reel winch with chain. I have seen reel winches used as
a windlass on commercial vessels mostly so they probably work for them but
they all had wire rope on them, not chain.

Having a lot of chain this high up on the foredeck may not do good things for
the center of gravity, but this would be greatly dependent on the design of
    the boat.

I would suggest, as others have, that you seek out folks that use the type of
device you are considering using to handle their anchor and ask about their
    experience using them.
