    RE: Subject

Many years ago NEMA developed the following standards:

Distribution devices such as X'fmrs, busway, c'bkrs, etc shall be rated
at 120VAC and multiples there of. (240,480,600)

Utilization devices such as motors, magnetic motor control, lighting,
etc shall be rated at 115VAC and multiples there of. (115,230,460,575)

The 5 VAC difference was intended to account for the line drop between
the distribution and the utilization device.

Most utilization devices are designed to operate at +10%/-15% of name
    plate rating.

As far as 50Hz operation is concerned, 50 Hz equipment will operate at 60Hz.

60Hz equipment will not operate without damage on 50 Hz.

There simply is not enough copper and iron in the device.

    Lew
